Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games while playing his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he played extensive hours and lost most times. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus even more on the game.
The actual improvement in his game began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly challenge each other. He had access into a few of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking abilities. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL hold’em.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker world ever. Howard relocated to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
