Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he enjoyed participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he would play extensive hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus even more on poker.
The real advancement in his game began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often wager against each other. He was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. He told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the strongest women players the poker world ever. Howard moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
